Panton warns Belize could face national and security risks under U.S. migration plan

By Belize Live News Staff: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton is doubling down on her call for full transparency regarding the proposed “Safe Third Country” agreement with the United States, emphasizing that Belize cannot afford to rush into an arrangement with such serious national implications.

Panton reiterated that Belize’s immigration and asylum systems are already strained, and the country lacks the necessary infrastructure, funding, and trained personnel to manage an influx of asylum seekers under such an agreement. She warned that without proper consultation and preparation, the plan could expose Belize to social, economic, and security challenges.

The Opposition Leader called on the government to release the full terms of the proposed deal and conduct nationwide consultations before making any commitments. She stressed that decisions of this magnitude must be guided by transparency, preparedness, and the protection of Belize’s sovereignty.

“The Belizean people deserve to know the facts,” Panton said. “This is not a partisan issue, t’s a matter of national security and the future stability of our country.”
