Cabinet authorizes final negotiations on Safe Third Country Agreement with the U.S.

By Belize Live News Staff: Cabinet has given approval for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, with the support of the Attorney General’s Ministry, to finalize negotiations on the proposed Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States of America.

According to the Cabinet brief, once negotiations are completed and the agreement is approved and executed, it will be sent to the Senate for ratification.

The proposed agreement is intended to promote regional cooperation on migration and asylum matters, ensuring that asylum seekers passing through Belize and the U.S. have access to a safe, lawful process.

However, the plan has drawn mixed reactions. Some have praised it as a step toward strengthening migration management, while others, including Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton, have called for transparency and public consultations, citing Belize’s limited resources and institutional capacity.

Government officials maintain that negotiations will continue with a focus on national security, humanitarian responsibility, and international cooperation.
