College degrees and AI: Time for Belizeans to get ready

By Belize Live News Staff: For decades, the path to success seemed clear: work hard, earn a college degree, and doors would open to stable, high-paying jobs. But in 2025, that old formula is starting to crack, and nowhere is the pressure more obvious than in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

Across the globe, students who invested years and thousands of dollars into degrees are discovering that the job market has changed. Tech graduates, once certain of six-figure careers, are finding themselves competing not only with other humans but also with AI systems that can write code, analyze data, and even screen job applications. Imagine spending sleepless nights studying computer science, only to be rejected by an automated filter before a real person even sees your résumé.

This is not just a Silicon Valley story, it’s a Belize story too. Our young people at UB, Galen, or studying abroad need to take notice. The question is no longer just “Do you have a degree?” but “Do you have skills that AI can’t easily replace?”

That’s where the future lies. AI will not kill opportunity, but it will reward those who adapt. Belizeans who combine their formal education with hands-on AI literacy, creativity, problem-solving, and resilience will be ahead of the curve. The graduates who thrive won’t be the ones clinging to outdated promises—they’ll be the ones who see change as a challenge to lead.

Fun fact: nearly half of Gen Z worldwide already feel their degrees are becoming obsolete. If that’s the perception in countries with billion-dollar industries, Belize must be even more proactive. Our nation cannot afford to lag behind.

So, to Belizean students and parents: don’t throw away the value of education, but don’t stop there either. Get ready now. Learn AI tools. Sharpen skills that make you stand out as a human being, not just a line on a résumé. Build the flexibility to pivot when industries shift.

The world is moving fast. AI isn’t waiting. The real question is, will Belizeans be ready?
