Andrew Munnings freed after 24 hours in jail over tax dispute

By Belize Live News Staff: Businessman Andrew Munnings was released from jail this Tuesday evening after spending 24 hours behind bars in a tax dispute that has ignited a firestorm of national debate. The funeral director’s arrest and detention at Hattieville Prison were widely criticized, with many claiming small businesses are being unfairly targeted.

A late-night agreement between his lawyer, OJ Elrington, and the Belize Tax Service (BTS) led to his release after a $2,000 payment was accepted by the court.

Upon his release, Munnings, with a shaved head, spoke to the press, stating he couldn’t pay what he didn’t have and that a single night away from his daughter was an eternity. He credited his freedom to the overwhelming support of the Belizean people, his lawyer, and his faith.

The case, which Munnings denies was a voluntary detention, remains a source of public contention. With another civil matter pending, he has pledged to continue his fight, insisting it is a stand for fairness for all entrepreneurs, not just himself.
