No more duty-free: U.S. order forces halt of Belize shipments

By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy & Logistics announced today that the Belize Postal Service will temporarily suspend certain shipments to the United States, effective Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

The suspension comes in response to the U.S. Government’s Executive Order 14324, which eliminates the longstanding de minimis duty-free exemption for low-value shipments entering the United States. Previously, packages valued up to USD $800 could enter duty-free, but now all goods will be taxed from the first dollar.

Under the new rule, customs duties must be paid by the sender before goods are cleared with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Only gifts valued under USD $100 and mail containing documents remain exempt.

As a result, district post offices across Belize will stop accepting goods at midday today, while the Belize City Post Office will accept shipments until 3:30 p.m.

The Ministry emphasized that the measure is temporary and efforts are being made to resume services as soon as possible in compliance with U.S. regulations.

For more information, the public is advised to contact Dr. Marsha Price, Post Master General of the Belize Postal Service.
