Hurricane Erin no threat to Belize, moves away from Caribbean

Mostly sunny skies expected across Belize today

By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans woke up today to slightly moist conditions across the country, but forecasters say the weather will gradually improve as the day progresses.

According to the National Meteorological Service, cloudy skies and scattered showers this morning will give way to mostly sunny conditions this afternoon. Tonight will be partly cloudy with only isolated showers. The only area expected to see more activity is the Maya Mountains, where forecasters note a medium chance of thunderstorms developing later today.

Marine conditions remain calm, with light and variable winds, slight seas, and wave heights between 1 to 3 feet. Temperatures will climb to highs of 95°F inland, 89°F along the coast, and 78°F in the hills, before dipping to 74°F, 77°F, and 68°F respectively tonight.

In the wider tropics, Hurricane Erin continues to churn northwest of Puerto Rico. As of 6:00 a.m., Erin was located near latitude 20.7N, longitude 67.0W, about 170 miles north-northwest of San Juan. With maximum sustained winds of 125 mph, Erin is moving west-northwest at 14 mph. The storm poses no threat to Belize.

The outlook for Monday and Monday night is for mainly fair and warm weather, with only isolated showers and a low chance of afternoon thunderstorms over the Maya Mountains.
