By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño’s visit to Japan took a major diplomatic turn Monday as he met with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru in Tokyo. The two leaders used the occasion to issue a joint message supporting the global rule of law and a free, open international order, an especially symbolic gesture in today’s shifting geopolitical climate.
Briceño, in Japan to participate in Expo 2025 in Osaka, emphasized Belize’s commitment to international cooperation and democratic values. The talks also touched on broadening economic partnerships and educational and cultural exchange programs.
At their joint press briefing, Prime Minister Ishiba called the partnership “encouraging” and highlighted Belize as an ally that shares Japan’s vision for a stable and lawful global framework.
Belize remains one of the few countries in Central America with formal diplomatic ties to Taiwan, an increasingly sensitive issue in global politics, especially in the Indo-Pacific. The meeting signals Japan’s continued interest in expanding its influence through alliances with like-minded democracies, no matter their size.
