By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic has confirmed two cases of New World screwworm infestation in wild howler monkeys in the Cayo District within the past 24 hours.
The parasite, which feeds on the living tissue of its host, is a serious threat to both wildlife and domestic animals. The injuries on the monkeys were described as extremely severe and too graphic to publicly share. One of the affected animals succumbed to its wounds despite intervention.
The re-emergence of this flesh-eating parasite has prompted an urgent call from wildlife authorities for the public to check their pets and livestock daily for any signs of wounds. Animals with untreated injuries are highly vulnerable to infestation.
The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) is urging residents to report any suspected cases of screwworm by calling the wildlife emergency hotline at 615-5159, available 24/7.
The public is also encouraged to treat all wounds promptly and seek veterinary assistance if there are any concerns. Early detection can save lives.
This marks the first confirmed screwworm outbreak in wildlife in recent memory, raising serious concerns for Belize’s fragile animal population.
