Prime Minister: “not surprised” by lawsuit threat over Belize Airport Authority decisions

By Belize Live News Staff: Following the cancellation of municipal airstrip security contracts and the looming threat of a lawsuit, Prime Minister John Briceño says discussions are ongoing to determine the next steps for the Belize Airports Authority (BAA).

Speaking to the press in his capacity as Minister for Civil Aviation, Briceño acknowledged disappointment over the legal dispute, stating, “I’m a bit disappointed that that’s going to happen, but not surprised.”

When asked how the BAA is managing security in the interim, Briceño said the police and airline operators have been stepping in temporarily. “What we have done is to ask the police and the airlines to be able to provide the security for the time being,” he said.

Briceño also revealed plans to revisit how security services are contracted moving forward. “Last time it was with limited tendering. This time it’s going to be open to everyone and to see who can give us the best proposal,” he said.
