MIDH slams vandalism at Haulover Bridge, public urged to report suspicious activity

By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) is sounding the alarm after the deliberate removal and theft of a section of aluminum railing from the Haulover Bridge, which separates pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

According to a statement from the Ministry, an inspection confirmed that the railing was physically cut and removed—an act the Ministry has condemned as “a selfish act of blatant vandalism.” Officials are urging the public to help put an end to this type of destruction.

In a related update, the Ministry also reported that approximately 4 kilometers of guardrails along the recently completed Coastal Plain Highway have been damaged—most likely due to reckless driving. The damage has occurred within just one year of the highway’s opening.

Thankfully, no lives were lost and no accidents have been directly linked to the damage. However, the Government and people of Belize are now responsible for a BZ$1.3 million repair bill.

The Ministry also highlighted another growing concern: the overwhelming amount of litter collected daily by MIDH road maintenance teams. “How can fellow Belizeans continue with this nastiness?” the Ministry questioned.

The MIDH is calling on the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity related to tampering with infrastructure, including signs, railings, and bridges. If you observe such actions, you are asked to immediately contact the Ministry at 828-5220.

The Ministry concluded its statement by urging citizens to take greater pride in Belize’s national infrastructure, reminding the public that “these assets are your assets.”
