Belize Zoo says goodbye to Lindo the Jaguar, beloved wildlife ambassador

By Belize Live News Staff: The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center has announced the passing of one of its most iconic residents, Lindo the jaguar, who died following a prolonged battle with chronic kidney disease. At over 18 years old, Lindo was one of the longest-living jaguars in human care in Belize, remembered for his transformation from a predator into a symbol of conservation and education.

Lindo first arrived at the Belize Zoo in 2008 after repeated predation on domesticated animals in the Linda Vista area of northern Belize. With rising concerns from the local community, the Belize Forest Department and the Belize Zoo intervened, relocating Lindo to the zoo where he could live out his life safely—becoming an unlikely ambassador for his species.

Through the Belize Zoo’s Human-Jaguar Conflict Program, Lindo helped shift perceptions. Once feared, he became a favorite among visitors, educators, and wildlife advocates. His presence helped many Belizeans and tourists alike understand and appreciate the role of jaguars in Belize’s ecosystems.

“Lindo quickly became a favorite among guests and staff alike,” noted the Belize Zoo in a heartfelt tribute. “He served as an ambassador for his species, inspiring thousands of Belizeans, especially schoolchildren, to develop a deeper appreciation and respect for jaguars.”

Rather than being euthanized as a threat, Lindo was offered a second chance—a testament to the Zoo’s commitment to wildlife rehabilitation and education. His journey from conflict animal to beloved ambassador is a story that has touched many and will leave a lasting legacy.

The Belize Zoo extended gratitude to all who played a role in Lindo’s life, including supporters, volunteers, staff, and the Forest Department, for their unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation.

Lindo’s memory will live on not just in the exhibits he once roamed, but in the hearts of those he inspired to care for Belize’s wild spaces and the animals who call them home.
