Commissioner of Police retains authority over unarmed security guard licensing, says FACB

By Belize Belize Live News Staff: The Firearms and Ammunition Control Board (FACB) has issued a formal clarification stating that the authority to approve and license unarmed security guards in Belize remains solely with the Commissioner of Police.

According to the FACB, this clarification comes in response to recent legislative amendments under the Private Security and Investigation Services (Control) (Amendment) Act, 2024. The amended law outlines that the FACB is now responsible for regulating firearms used or held by private security companies and armed security guards. However, the Commissioner of Police continues to have full jurisdiction over the vetting, licensing, and approval of all unarmed security personnel.

The FACB emphasized that it has no role in the licensing of unarmed security guards and has already forwarded any such applications it previously received to the Commissioner’s office for proper handling.

All private security companies and individuals seeking to be licensed as unarmed security guards are now urged to apply directly to the Belize Police Department, in line with existing procedures under Chapter 138:01 of the laws of Belize.

The FACB also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting public safety and upholding the law through the responsible oversight of firearm licensing, thanking all stakeholders for their continued cooperation and understanding.
