By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s head of state, King Charles III, was caught in a heavy downpour on Sunday night during Antigua and Barbuda’s independence parade, and for a few moments, no one seemed to have his umbrella.
The King and Queen Camilla had just arrived at the cricket ground for the celebrations when the rain began pouring down.
Queen Camilla, dressed in a white gown, quickly turned and signalled to her staff. After a few attempts, a protection officer hurried over with her clear umbrella and escorted her to the covered seating area to watch the rest of the parade.
The King was not so lucky. He was left standing in the rain, waving his arms and repeatedly asking aides where his umbrella was.
Eventually, his equerry rushed over with a compact black umbrella, and the King carried on to the middle of the ground to inspect the Guard of Honour as the rain continued.
The visit marked Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th independence anniversary. The twin island nation became independent on November 1, 1981, just six weeks after Belize celebrated its own independence on September 21, 1981.
Like Belize, Antigua and Barbuda remains a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth, with King Charles as head of state.
