After Tropic Air’s exit, Maya Island Air returns to Punta Gorda with government fuel assistance

By Belize Live News Staff: Maya Island Air has resumed flights to Punta Gorda following Tropic Air’s withdrawal from the Toledo route, preventing an interruption in scheduled air service to southern Belize.

Toledo East Area Representative Osmond Martinez confirmed Sunday that Maya Island Air’s first flight landed successfully and that air transportation was continuing normally.

The development follows Tropic Air’s September 30 announcement that it would close its Punta Gorda station effective November 1, 2026, after years of financial losses.

Tropic Air CEO Max Greif explained that the airline could no longer sustain the unprofitable route, citing the economic environment and uncertainty surrounding proposed changes to Belize’s domestic aviation infrastructure.

The announcement raised concerns among Toledo residents and tourism stakeholders, who feared losing an important transportation connection.

Following discussions between government officials and Maya Island Air, Prime Minister John Briceño confirmed on October 29 that the airline had agreed to take over the route.

Briceño said the Government would provide duty-free fuel assistance to support the service, rather than a direct operating subsidy. Reports also indicated plans for government assistance with airport facilities and tourism promotion.

Martinez welcomed the successful landing and thanked Maya Island Air, Prime Minister Briceño, Cabinet, the Belize Airports Authority and CEO Narda Garcia for helping maintain air connectivity.

Maya Island Air previously operated flights to Punta Gorda before discontinuing the route several years ago. Its return marks an important development for residents, businesses and visitors travelling to Toledo.
