By Belize Live News Staff: The Central Building Authority has decertified the San Pedro Building Unit, shifting responsibility for building matters on the island to the national authority.
In a public notice, the CBA and the Ministry of Infrastructure said the decision took effect on Wednesday, October 28. The CBA will now handle building permit applications, plan reviews and inspections in the municipality.
Property owners and agents with active applications previously submitted through the San Pedro unit are being directed to contact CBA headquarters in Belmopan for updates.
The San Pedro Town Council says it has formally requested the audit report and recommendations behind the decision so it can understand the concerns and address them.
The council said it has already installed the required software and updated outstanding records, and has asked the CBA to reconsider.
It is also seeking clarity on how the change will affect permits, approvals and other services to the public.
“The San Pedro Town Council remains committed to ensuring that development on our island is managed responsibly and in accordance with the law,” the council said.
Further guidance is expected once the CBA responds.
