Cabinet promises cost of living relief, details still coming

By Belize Live News Staff: Cabinet says it is working on measures to address the rising cost of living, but Belizeans will have to wait for the details.

Speaking in Corozal on Friday, Prime Minister John Briceño said Cabinet discussed the issue this week and is working with the Financial Secretary and the Ministry of Finance to identify savings in the budget.

“With that savings, we want to then be able to use it to be able to address the cost of living adjustments, different programs and steps that we’re going to take we believe that can have a direct positive impact on the lives of our citizens,” Briceño said.

The PM said the plan is still being finalized.

“I don’t want to jump the gun right now. We’re working now on the finer details, and once we work that out, we will be able to make an announcement soon,” he said.

The proposed measures are expected to run initially from November 2026 through March 2027.

The announcement comes as Belizeans face higher fuel prices and the possibility of increased electricity bills, with BEL seeking to double its COPA cap.
