By Belize Live News Staff: A police operation aimed at finding illegal weapons in Orange Walk Town ended with an unexpected discovery inside the police station itself.
On Saturday afternoon, a joint team of police units searched apartments on Baeza Alley acting on information about illegal firearms. No guns or ammunition were found.
Four men were detained pending investigation into alleged gang membership and taken to the Orange Walk Police Station.
There, an officer spotted a small plastic bag on the floor near one of the detainees. It held eight tiny zip lock bags, each printed with a marijuana leaf design and containing suspected cocaine.
The officer cautioned the men and told them the station’s interior cameras were working. One of them allegedly admitted the bag was his.
Police later reviewed the station’s surveillance footage, which they say provided valuable information. The suspect also admitted ownership during an interview in the presence of a Justice of the Peace, according to police.
Xavier Roque Burgess, 24, a deliveryman of San Juan Alley, was charged with possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply. He chose to remain silent when cautioned.
