Chebat takes command of National Security

By  Belize Live News Staff: Michel Chebat has been handed control of Belize’s security apparatus.

The Area Representative for Cayo North will lead the newly created Ministry of National Security, which replaces the former Ministry of Home Affairs. The change was decided at a lengthy Cabinet meeting in Belmopan.

Under the new structure, Chebat will be responsible for both the Belize Police Department and the Belize Defence Force. Placing the two forces under a single ministry marks a significant shift in how Government manages national security.

Chebat is not giving up his other duties. He will continue to oversee Energy and Ports.

He steps into the role as Belize faces pressing security concerns, from crime at home to a recent Guatemalan military aircraft incursion into Belizean airspace, which the National Security Council confirmed through radar data this week.
