By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says work on a major redevelopment of the Port of Belize is expected to begin next year, with the proposed investment valued at more than $800 million.
Briceño announced the project during his 2026 State of the Nation Address, describing it as the largest infrastructure undertaking in Belize’s history.
The proposed works include deepening and widening the marine access to Belize City, constructing new cargo facilities and creating a modern gateway for cruise tourism.
The Prime Minister presented the port project as one of several major investments expected to move forward in the near term. He also highlighted the Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact with the United States, which targets investment in Belize’s energy and education sectors.
Briceño thanked the Opposition and Social Partners for their support of the MCC programme. The Port of Belize redevelopment, meanwhile, is expected to begin in 2027 if the announced timetable proceeds as planned.
