Historic $800 million Port of Belize redevelopment set to begin next year

By Belize Live News Staff: BELMOPAN, Belize, September 15, 2026: Work on what Prime Minister John Briceño describes as the largest infrastructure project in Belize’s history is expected to begin next year with the redevelopment of the Port of Belize.

Briceño said the project represents a potential investment of more than $800 million.

The redevelopment is expected to include the deepening and widening of marine access to Belize City, construction of new cargo facilities and development of a modern cruise tourism gateway.

The Prime Minister said the project could reshape both Belize City and the wider national economy.

He placed particular emphasis on the potential for a more efficient cargo port to reduce shipping costs on imports.

According to Briceño, lower shipping costs could ultimately translate into savings for Belizean households because the cost of bringing goods into the country affects prices throughout the economy.

The port project was one of several large-scale undertakings highlighted in the State of the Nation Address, alongside investments in energy, education and infrastructure.
