By Belize Live News Staff: A Belmopan resident realised he had likely been targeted by scammers after being asked to send a second payment to secure a supposed $10,000 loan.
The man received an email claiming that a loan had been approved and that a $300 deposit was needed before the process could be completed.
Believing the message was connected to a genuine loan application made by a relative, he transferred the money to the bank account provided.
The situation became suspicious when another message arrived about an hour later requesting an additional $500 before the funds could be released.
He contacted the legitimate Loans2Go office and was told the company had no record of the application and does not direct customers to make payments into personal accounts.
Police were later informed that the loan offer originated from a fake Facebook page using the company’s name.
Loans2Go said it has reported the matter to the Financial Intelligence Unit and has also reported the social media page.
The complainant contacted his bank in an effort to stop the original $300 transfer.
Police are investigating.
