Free drinks or one star: Smokeez refuses to play along

By Belize Live News Staff: No knife, no raised voice, just a table of tourists and a threat every small business owner dreads. Give us four free drinks, or watch your ratings burn.

That’s what Smokeez Seaside Restaurant & Bar in Belize City says happened at their establishment, and they’ve taken it public so other businesses know what’s out there.

Their account goes like this. Five American women came in, ordered food and drinks, then demanded a promotion they didn’t qualify for. Staff explained. The ladies even admitted they didn’t qualify. Then four of them switched gears and made a new offer nobody asked for: four complimentary drinks to go, or the one star reviews start dropping on Google and TripAdvisor.

Now here’s the detail everybody’s talking about. The fifth woman in the group refused to join in. According to Smokeez, she said flat out that she didn’t want to be part of the extortion, laughed, and walked off from her own friends. One out of five knew exactly where the line was.

Smokeez didn’t budge. “No customer should be able to pressure or threaten a business into providing free products or services through the threat of negative reviews,” their statement reads. They also say they’re not posting for drama. They saw a San Pedro restaurant describe a nearly identical experience with self-proclaimed influencers, and figured it was time to warn everybody. We haven’t verified that San Pedro account ourselves, and fair is fair, this is Smokeez’s side of the story. No police report has been mentioned and the tourists haven’t been identified.

But let’s talk about why this matters. Belize’s small businesses live and die by their stars. One nasty review can outweigh fifty happy customers who never typed a word, and that’s exactly what makes this kind of threat work. So here’s the counter move, and share it with every business owner you know: stay polite, say no, document everything, and report blackmail reviews to the platforms. Google and TripAdvisor both ban that kind of review and will investigate. And a threat against your business can go to the police too.

And one more thing, because it needs saying. The tourists filling Belize’s restaurants right now are overwhelmingly lovely people. This isn’t about tourists. It’s about four individuals who allegedly tried to turn a rating system into a shakedown, and one Belize City restaurant that decided its integrity wasn’t for sale, not even for four drinks.

Business owners, talk to us. Have you ever faced the review threat? What did you do? Drop it in the comments.
