By Belize Live News Staff: The first round ended when the police lights appeared, stones already thrown, machetes already carried into view, tempers already lit over money. Everybody scattered. And for thirty minutes, a San Jose Village yard held its breath.
The Belize Police Department reports that a 22-year-old construction worker of the village came forward on Sunday, August 9, 2026, to describe what Saturday night became after the group came back.
It started, by his account, at about 10:30 p.m. with a fight over money between himself and a man he knows. The man summoned family, and the yard filled with stones and provocation, one arrival reportedly carrying two machetes, until the first police visit emptied the scene.
At 11:00 p.m. the second wave arrived, pint bottles flying, insults flowing, and one man carrying a piece of iron five feet long. He entered the yard, the report states, and the fight that followed pulled in both families. The complainant took the iron bar across his left forearm, grabbed his attacker from behind, and then came the moment that turned a brawl into a grievous harm file: the man seized his right hand and bit down on his ring finger until it bled profusely, and when the complainant finally checked himself after police arrived and pulled the fighters apart, the small top meaty portion of the finger was gone.
The Northern Regional Hospital treated and discharged him, a doctor certified the injury as grievous harm, and he has asked for court action. Police have detained a 19-year-old villager in connection with the matter, and with no charge laid, no names appear here, while the night’s events remain the complainant’s account for the investigation to test.
What the file records plainly is the shape of the thing: a money quarrel, a family mobilized, a retreat, a return with weapons, and two police visits to the same yard in one night. Feuds fed like that rarely starve on their own, and San Jose’s quiet corner would do well to let the court, not a third round, settle the balance.
A fingertip is gone for the sake of a money argument. The investigation continues, and anyone with information can reach the Orange Walk police.
