Two women, one shove and a meat pie stop that went completely off the rails

Two women, one shove and a meat pie stop that went completely off the rails

By Belize Live News Staff: The morning began with meat pies. Two sisters, a parking lot, an ordinary Friday breakfast on their feet, until two women passed by, and one of them chose the space directly between the sisters as her path through.

The Belize Police Department reports that the 23-year-old San Pablo Village woman responded to the shove with a line half the country has said or heard: say excuse next time. According to her report, the answer came in motion, not words. The woman turned, came back at them, pushed the sister aside, seized the complainant by the hair, and scratched her beneath the left eye.

What followed was a full exchange. The complainant fought back, leaving scratches on the woman’s hands and face. The sister waded in to separate them and failed. A father got the phone call every father dreads, and delivered his daughter to the Orange Walk Police Station, where police soon brought in the other party as well.

Then came the part that turns a quarrel into a lesson. Medico-legal forms went to both women, and the doctor certified both sets of injuries as harm, hers and hers. And with the wounds balanced on both sides of the ledger, so were the consequences: police charged both Angelina Gonzalez, 23, of San Pablo Village, and Merari Ramirez, 27, a supervisor of Chan Pine Ridge Village, with harm. Both met the caution with silence, both made bail, and both are due before the Magistrate Court on Monday, August 10, at 9:00 a.m., the rare fight where the rematch is scheduled in front of a magistrate.

Both women, it must be said, are presumed innocent unless and until the court decides otherwise.

The takeaway travels well beyond one parking lot. Being first to the police station is not a shield, and self-defence has legal edges the heat of a moment rarely respects. When both faces carry scratches and both files carry certificates, the law’s answer is often exactly what it was on Friday: charge them both, and let the magistrate sort the shove from the response.

Two meat pies went unfinished. Two court seats are reserved for Monday. And somewhere in Orange Walk, excuse me remains the cheapest phrase nobody used.
