By Belize Live News Staff: The licence was valid. The insurance was current. The sticker was in order. For a moment on La Democracia Street on Sunday night, the paperwork was flawless, and then the officer got close enough to smell the breath behind it.
The Belize Police Department reports that patrolling officers watched a grey Jeep Cherokee run the traffic light at Queen Victoria Avenue and Otro Benque Road at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026. The revolving lights went on, the SUV pulled over, and the driver, identified as Osbaldo Alonzo, 37, a labourer of Tower Hill Village, handed over documents that all checked out.
What did not check out, according to police, was the strong aroma of alcohol on his breath and the slur in his speech. Alonzo was informed of the offence of driving under the influence, arrested, cautioned, and taken to the Orange Walk Police Station, his vehicle impounded behind him.
Then came the part of the night that will likely matter most in court. Asked at the station to provide a urine or blood sample, and warned plainly that refusing is itself an offence, Alonzo refused. Police drove him to the Northern Regional Hospital and asked again, warning again, this time in the presence of a doctor. He refused again, without reasonable cause, and the holding cell received him pending charges. The SUV went home with a relative.
No formal charge had been laid at the time of the report, and Alonzo, as always, holds the presumption of innocence unless and until a court rules otherwise.
But the night carries a lesson worth every driver’s attention, because it is widely misunderstood. Some believe that refusing the specimen starves the case of evidence and beats the system. Belizean law says otherwise: the refusal, made without reasonable cause after proper warning, is an offence standing on its own two feet, no lab result required. Sunday night’s driver declined the test twice, and in doing so, may simply have handed the prosecution its simplest possible file.
The old advice remains cheaper than all of it: if the drinks are flowing, the keys belong to someone else.
