Owner watches from parked car as man mounts his bike

By Belize Live News Staff: At 1:30 on a Sunday morning, most yards are asleep. In one Orange Walk Town yard, a mechanic sat quietly inside an old parked car, and had the strangest front-row seat in the district: a man settling onto his bicycle, five feet away, preparing to pedal off into the night.

The Belize Police Department reports that the 24-year-old had his brown Hurricane beach cruiser, worth $250, lying on the ground in his unfenced yard when the visitor arrived on Sunday, August 2, 2026, and mounted it.

The ride never started. The owner burst from the car, seized the man by the back of his T-shirt, and put the question plainly: what happened, why you the tek my bike? The answer offered, that he had come checking for a light for someone he named, will now be weighed somewhere far less forgiving than a dark yard, because the owner held on, called police, and kept his catch talking for the twenty minutes it took officers to arrive, the veranda light shining on the whole scene.

Police detained the rider, identified as Chayanne Mesh, 28, a labourer of Trial Farm Village, a man the complainant has known for about two months. Forms were read in English, understood, and signed, the bicycle photographed for evidence, and on Monday, August 3, the charge landed: theft. Mesh met the caution with silence.

He is, as always, presumed innocent unless and until the court rules otherwise.

For the district’s long-suffering bicycle owners, the case reads like overdue justice for the whole streak, the Skyline from the bus terminal, the purple Hurricane from Guinea Grass, the Hurricane from the Trial Farm yard, all gone without a trace. It took an owner sitting invisible in an old car at 1:30 a.m. to finally interrupt the pattern mid-pedal.

The lesson cuts both ways in the northern night. For owners: the unfenced yard remains an open invitation, and luck like this is rare. For anyone eyeing a parked cruiser: you never know who is watching from the old car five feet away.
