Dear America, your reef and your temples are ready

By Belize Live News Staff:

Dear America,

We saw the headlines. The Seattle Times has been telling your West Coast that Belize is the easiest reef and Maya temple trip in the Caribbean, all thanks to the new flights bringing you straight to our doorstep. We would act surprised, but honestly, we have been waiting for you to notice.

Here is what changed. As Belize Live News reported, BermudAir and the Belize Tourism Board are opening five new nonstop routes from your cities, Boston, Raleigh-Durham, Tampa Bay, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando, direct to our Philip Goldson International Airport. Fort Lauderdale starts October 26, the rest lift off between December 18 and 21, right as your winter turns cruel and our December turns golden. They join the friends who already visit daily, United, American, Delta, Alaska, Southwest and company, so wherever you live, the Jewel is now a single flight away.

And once you land, allow us a few family secrets.

If you are beach people, and we suspect many of you are, point yourselves to the Placencia Peninsula and check into Chabil Mar Villas, our award-winning, guest-exclusive beachfront gem where the Caribbean practically laps at your veranda and the world’s second largest barrier reef waits offshore.

If you are jungle people, the kind who want howler monkeys for an alarm clock, head west to San Ignacio, where Villa Massis Resort sits on the Mopan River with good food, good vibes, and the ancient Maya sites of Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, and the ATM Cave close enough to fill every day differently.

And if you cannot decide, here is the best part: you do not have to. We are a small country with two big personalities, and the smart travelers do both, sea then jungle, or jungle then sea. Just hand the planning to Barefoot Services in Placencia, our own local travel experts, and let people who live this country daily build you the week of your life.

A few housekeeping notes before you arrive. We speak English, so save the translation app for your next trip. Our dollar is pegged to yours at two to one, so the math never surprises you. And our national schedule runs on something you may find unfamiliar: no rush whatsoever.

So book the flight, pack light, and come see why your own newspapers are running out of superlatives. The reef is warm, the temples are ancient, the fry jacks are fresh, and the welcome has been ready for five hundred years.

Love,
Belize

P.S. Bring reef-safe sunscreen. We take care of what we love, and so should you.
