Search warrant turns up suspected cannabis in village home

By Belize Live News Staff: A police drug operation in Independence Village has ended with a 19-year-old facing a charge, after a search of his home produced nine small bags of suspected cannabis from a wooden cabinet.

The Belize Police Department reports that on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at about 3:00 p.m., officers from multiple units descended on the Stann Creek District village for an anti-drug operation. With a search warrant in hand, they searched a residence and discovered the nine transparent plastic bags, containing a green leafy substance believed to be cannabis, tucked inside a cabinet.

The occupant was taken along with the find to the Intermediate Southern Formation, where the scale settled the number: 27 grams.

That figure matters under Belizean law. Possession of up to 10 grams on private premises was decriminalized back in 2017, but anything above that threshold remains a criminal offence, and 27 grams sits well past the line.

On Friday, July 24, police formally arrested and charged Jaylen Joe Logan, a 19-year-old self-employed man of Sundown Trail, Independence Village, with possession of a controlled drug.
