By Belize Live News Staff: The construction site sat just across from his own front door. It was there, on Friday night, that a San Jose Nuevo Palmar family’s world stopped, when 38-year-old watchman Javier George Ewan was found lifeless at the very site he was hired to guard.
The Belize Police Department reports that word came in by phone at about 10:15 p.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026. Officers arriving at the two-floor construction site, a short distance off the Philip Goldson Highway, found Ewan lying sideways on the floor, with injuries to his head and body.
The last known hours of his life raise the questions the investigation must now answer. A relative who visited him that morning around 10:00 a.m. found him lying on a sponge, vomiting, reportedly the after-effects of drinking the night before. He told her to go on to work and bring him food when she returned. When she came back at about 10:00 p.m., she found him motionless, and ran to a neighbour for help to call police.
Ewan was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:10 a.m. Saturday. The scene was processed, and his body now awaits a post mortem examination.
What happened in those twelve hours between her visits remains the heart of the matter. The injuries noted by police, the reported drinking, the long day alone at the site, none of it yet adds up to an answer, and police have drawn no conclusions, with the post mortem expected to speak first.
For now, a village mourns a watchman who died within sight of his own home, and a family waits for the examination that may explain why. The matter remains under investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Orange Walk police.
