Bullets under a sponge: police raid abandoned house stash

Bullets under a sponge: police raid abandoned house stash

By Belize Live News Staff: Somebody’s hiding spot has been cleaned out. A tip led Orange Walk’s Quick Response Team to an abandoned house on the Palmar Road on Saturday, where a lift of a yellow sponge revealed what someone hoped would stay secret: 27 live rounds of 9mm ammunition, a magazine, and a bag of suspected cannabis.

The Belize Police Department reports that officers conducted the search on Saturday, July 18, 2026, acting upon information received. Beneath the sponge sat a transparent plastic holding the ammunition, 27 brass 9mm rounds across three different brands, alongside a black magazine, plus a separate plastic containing a green leafy substance believed to be cannabis.

Nobody was in the area to claim any of it, so the entire cache travelled to the Orange Walk Police Station as found property. There, the suspected cannabis registered 93.13 grams on the scale, and everything, drugs, rounds, and magazine, was sealed, labelled, and logged into the exhibit room.

The cannabis is a familiar story. The ammunition is the unsettling part. Twenty-seven live rounds stashed in an empty building means a loaded intention somewhere out there lost its supply, and in a district where 9mm shells rained on San Antonio Road in a drive-by just days ago, every round taken off the street counts. Police have made no connection between this find and any shooting, but no one will mind the coincidence of the calibre being noticed.

Whoever hid the stash now knows it is gone. Police would surely like to meet them. Anyone with information can reach the Orange Walk police or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 922, no name needed, just the knowledge.

One sponge lifted, one stash lighter. The quiet wins matter too.
