Panton to Briceño: it is time for you to go

By Belize Live News Staff: The gloves are off. Any doubt about how far the Opposition intends to push its accountability campaign evaporated on Friday, when the United Democratic Party marched through Belize City and its leader stood at Battlefield Park demanding nothing less than fresh elections.

The day began at UDP headquarters, where supporters assembled before setting off through the city under the theme “Stand for Belize.” By the time the crowd poured into the park for the main rally, the message had sharpened into a warning aimed squarely at the Prime Minister.

“It is time for him to go,” Tracy Taegar-Panton declared, promising to “keep the fire going” until what she labelled a corrupt administration calls elections. Strong words, and it should be said plainly, they are the Opposition Leader’s political charge, not an established finding. The Ministry of National Defence allegations that lit this fuse remain under a government-ordered audit, and that audit has reached no conclusions. The government’s consistent position is that accountability is being handled through those proper channels.

Panton, though, argued the streets told their own story. Belizeans, she said, are frustrated, tired, and suffering, and the party had simply built them a stage to say so. She pointed proudly to the reach of the turnout, caucuses from the north, south, and centre, plus San Pedro, as proof the discontent is national, not local.

Sharing that stage, UDP National Campaign Manager Juliet Thimbriel delivered her own broadside. Belizeans, she charged, are fed up with “stealing,” with “politicians that are frauds,” and with contracts flowing to politicians’ relatives. “They are sick and tired of being taken advantage of,” she said, adding that she speaks not as a candidate but as a citizen informing the public.

Thimbriel also noted that some buses bringing supporters were slowed on the road at what she took to be checkpoints, though she pointedly declined to allege anything deliberate.

One march does not decide a political fight. But Friday made the state of play unmistakable: the Opposition has moved from statements to streets, and it is betting that public frustration, over the scandal, over crime, over the cost of living, is deep enough to sustain the pressure. The Prime Minister now faces a rival who has publicly vowed not to let up.

The next move belongs to the government.
