Francis Fonseca, Minister of Culture and Chairman of the National Celebrations Commission, alongside Commission members, officially unveiled the theme for the Belize@45 National Celebrations.
Chosen as the winning entry was “Look At Me: I am Belize@45,” submitted by 18-year-old Amber Mariano. The Commission explained that, as the nation marks 45 years of Independence, the theme is designed to put the focus on the people, celebrating every Belizean whose resilience, diversity, culture, talent, and shared dreams help shape the country’s story.
According to officials, the message is meant to remind Belizeans that the nation is defined not just by its landscapes or institutions, but by the strength, unity, and spirit of its people. The celebrations, they say, will honour the individuals and communities who represent the nation’s past, present, and future, and the collective identity that makes Belize one people, one nation.
The unveiling has not been without its share of chatter, though. Across social media, a number of Belizeans have been having fun at the theme’s expense, with the “Look At Me” phrasing drawing a wave of jokes and lighthearted mockery. It quickly became a trending topic of conversation on local pages.
Not everyone has joined in the ribbing, however. Some have defended the theme, arguing that its intention is heartfelt and its meaning clear, to celebrate the everyday Belizeans at the centre of the nation’s journey. For them, the wording is simply an invitation for every citizen to feel seen and valued.
