World Cup demand may explain Mexico cocaine seizures, analysts say

By Belize Live News Staff: Could the World Cup be fuelling a spike in cocaine trafficking through Mexico? That is the theory being floated by security analysts after two major drug seizures this month, though Mexican officials are far from convinced.

As reported by Reuters, Mexican security forces seized just over three metric tons of cocaine on June 22, in busts carried out the same day in the western state of Guerrero and the central state of Tlaxcala. The Tlaxcala seizure stood out in particular, as the landlocked state is not known as a trafficking route and sits close to Mexico City.

Six security experts who spoke to Reuters suggested the World Cup could help explain the unusual activity. With the tournament partly hosted by Mexico and expected to attract around 5.5 million visitors, analysts theorised that rising demand in and around Mexico City may have pushed criminal groups to stockpile larger quantities of cocaine in nearby storage locations.

Andrés Sumano of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte likened it to standard business behaviour ahead of a big event, with trafficking groups keeping more product on hand to meet expected demand. Researcher Vicente Sánchez offered a similar assessment, describing the World Cup connection as the most plausible reason for such a large cache turning up in Tlaxcala. Reuters further noted that some Mexico City drug dealers reported an uptick in demand tied to the tournament.

Still, the authorities have not backed the theory. When announcing the seizures, officials did not link them to the World Cup, and the Tlaxcala government pushed back directly. Government spokesperson Antonio Martínez said the bust was not evidence that the state is a center for organized crime, and stressed that there was nothing to connect it to international events.

Ultimately, the World Cup explanation remains an unproven hypothesis rather than an established fact. What is certain is that the seizures mark a sizable blow against traffickers, and underscore the ongoing struggle against the drug trade in the wider region.
