By Belize Live News Staff: A new chapter is unfolding for higher education in Belize, as the University of Belize (UB) and Georgia Southern University in the United States formalised a partnership set to expand access to research and advanced degrees for Belizean students and faculty.
The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding during a ceremony on UB’s main campus in Belmopan, officially launching a collaboration that will benefit both sides. For UB, the headline benefit is clear: students and faculty will gain access to master’s and doctoral programs at Georgia Southern, supported by streamlined applications and financial aid. In return, Georgia Southern gains access to Belize’s rich natural research sites, ideal for studying marine biology, tropical ecology, and natural resource management.
For Belizean educators, the arrangement is especially appealing. UB faculty can earn advanced degrees through a hybrid model that allows them to keep teaching at home, spending one academic year at a Georgia Southern campus before returning to Belize to complete their research while continuing their duties. UB graduates who qualify can also pursue graduate studies at Georgia Southern with research or teaching assistantships, or benefit from in-state tuition rates.
Encouragingly, the partnership is already bearing fruit. Two recent UB graduates have begun doctoral studies in materials science and environmental science, and more students have shown interest in fields like engineering and applied computing following recent exchange visits.
Georgia Southern’s provost, Avinandan Mukherjee, Ph.D., described the agreement as a reflection of the university’s commitment to global collaboration, noting that connecting the two institutions creates new pathways for discovery and academic excellence while tackling challenges that cross borders.
UB President Vincent Palacio, Ph.D., was equally enthusiastic, calling it one of the university’s most productive partnerships to date. He pointed to the guest lectures already held and the UB students already accepted into Georgia Southern’s graduate programs as proof of its early success, expressing optimism for even greater impact in the years to come.
With plans to collaborate on pressing issues like coastal resiliency and national development, the partnership represents more than just academic exchange. It is a long-term investment in Belize’s brightest minds, and in building the kind of skilled, globally competitive talent the country needs for the future.
