By Belize Live News Staff: One of the three people injured in last week’s shooting in Lords Bank Village, Ladyville, has died from his injuries.
Police have confirmed the passing of 19-year-old Giovanni Gillette, who was among those wounded when a gunman opened fire on a group in the village. Gillette had been taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he had been listed in critical but stable condition, before he later succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting occurred when, according to police, a male person walked up in front of a yard where Gillette and others were socializing and fired several shots toward the group. Three people were struck. Two of them, Gillette and 24-year-old Alfredo Flores, were hospitalized, while a third, Edgar Flores, sustained injuries but declined medical treatment.
Records show that Gillette had recently been charged in a separate matter involving an alleged unlicensed firearm. That case had not gone before the courts for trial, and with his passing, it will not proceed. As in any such matter, he had been entitled to the presumption of innocence.
Police have not yet named a suspect or established a motive in the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
