By Belize Live News Staff: Belize is facing growing flood concerns after heavy rainfall overnight caused rising water levels and dangerous conditions on several major roadways.
The National Emergency Management Organization has warned that flooding can develop rapidly as excessive rainfall continues to impact portions of the country. The latest bulletin highlights severe conditions in the Stann Creek District, where some transportation routes have already been affected.
Officials reported that Kendall received more than a foot of rainfall, totaling 12.7 inches, in one of the heaviest downpours recorded during the current weather event. The rainfall has contributed to flooding concerns across central and southern Belize.
As a result, Mile 7 on the Hummingbird Highway and Mile 16 on the Coastal Plain Highway have been declared impassable. Emergency management officials say motorists should avoid these areas entirely until water levels recede and road conditions can be reassessed.
NEMO is advising residents living in low-lying and flood-prone communities to remain vigilant, monitor official updates, and be prepared should conditions worsen. Drivers are also being reminded that attempting to cross flooded roads can be extremely dangerous and may place lives at risk.
Authorities say they remain on high alert and are working with local agencies to monitor waterways, roads, and bridges throughout the affected regions as the rainfall event continues.
