By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans who deal in US dollars every day and that is most of us need to pay attention to something significant happening in Washington right now.
The administration of United States President Donald Trump is preparing to introduce a brand new 250 dollar bill that could feature a portrait of Trump himself on the note. If it passes into law that bill could eventually find its way into wallets, cash registers, banks and businesses right here in Belize.
Why does this matter to us? Because the US dollar is accepted countrywide in Belize at an exchange rate of two Belizean dollars to one US dollar. That means a 250 US dollar bill would be worth 500 Belize dollars in your hand. That is not a small note. That is the kind of money that changes how cash transactions work at every level of daily Belizean life.
Federal law in the United States currently prohibits printing currency with the image of a living person. It also specifies the denominations that can legally be produced and 250 dollars is not among them. But Trump allies in Congress have introduced legislation that would make an exception to both of those laws specifically to allow this note to be created.
The lawmakers behind the bill say the 250 dollar amount was chosen to symbolize America’s 250th anniversary of independence this year. A Treasury Department spokesperson confirmed the agency is conducting planning and due diligence in response to the legislation and that if it becomes law the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is ready to move forward with production.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters he does not think there is anything wrong with having the image of the person in office during the country’s 250th anniversary on a commemorative note marking that occasion.
Not everyone agrees. United States Senator Mark Warner has criticized the move sharply saying that while American families are struggling with the rising cost of gas, groceries, housing and healthcare, the administration’s priorities are completely detached from the challenges ordinary people face every day.
For Belizeans the political debate in Washington is one thing. But the practical reality is another. If this legislation passes and a 250 US dollar bill enters circulation it will eventually make its way into the Belizean economy. Businesses, money changers, banks and everyday Belizeans will need to be prepared to recognize and handle a denomination that has never existed in US currency before.
The legislation still needs approval from both the US House and Senate. It remains unclear whether the notes could even be printed in time for America’s 250th anniversary on July 4th.
