PM Briceño urges understanding as fuel tax relief hits 80 million dollar limit

By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño is defending the latest fuel prices, arguing that Belize cannot escape the impact of rising global oil costs.

Speaking following the latest midnight fuel adjustment, Briceño pushed back against criticism that government is allowing fuel prices to climb too high. The Prime Minister pointed to international conflicts and global supply issues, including tensions involving Iran, as major factors driving fuel increases worldwide.

His comments come after regular gasoline in Belize jumped by $1.32 per gallon, while premium fuel surprisingly dropped by eight cents, making premium cheaper than regular gasoline. Diesel also fell by just over one dollar and kerosene saw a slight decrease.

Briceño argued that Belize is a small buyer on the global fuel market and therefore has limited control over international pricing. He added that government has already reduced fuel taxes significantly in an effort to ease the burden on Belizean consumers.
