Financial Intelligence Unit issues scam alert

By Belize Live News Staff: The Financial Intelligence Unit has issued a public warning after scammers reportedly began circulating fake emails impersonating FIU staff members.

Officials say the fraudulent messages are designed to appear official and may attempt to trick recipients into sharing confidential information or making financial transactions.

The FIU stressed that it does not process loans, approve financial assistance or request banking credentials through email communications.

Belizeans are being encouraged to exercise caution and independently verify any suspicious message claiming to come from the agency.

The advisory also warns anyone who may have responded to the scam emails to contact their financial institution immediately and change any compromised passwords.
