Man accused of grave desecration sent for psychiatric evaluation

By Belize Live News Staff: A Belize City man accused of disturbing a gravesite and tampering with a body has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after appearing in court this week.

The accused, 33-year-old Jonathan Abner Flores, was brought before a senior magistrate where he was read several serious charges, including disinterment of a dead body, desecration of a tomb, and other related offenses.

According to court proceedings, Flores did not enter a plea after the charges were read. The court instead ordered that he undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine his mental condition before the matter can proceed further.

Although bail was set at $1,500, relatives reportedly informed the court that it would be safer if Flores remained in custody for the time being.

His case has been adjourned to May 4, 2026, and he has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison while the psychiatric report is prepared.

Family members of the deceased woman whose grave was allegedly disturbed said they hope the matter can soon be resolved so they can move forward.
