By Belize Live News Staff: Your water bill is going up.
The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has finalized its decision on Belize Water Services Limited’s rate review, approving an increase that will take effect in April.
While BWS initially requested a 20 percent rate hike, the PUC capped the increase at 13.5 percent. For the average customer, that works out to roughly a 5.5 percent increase on their monthly bill.
The ruling comes after a review process that began late last year. In addition to the rate increase, the PUC approved a minimum charge for customers using between 0 and 500 gallons of water.
According to the commission, the adjustment ensures all users contribute a reasonable share toward maintaining the national water system.
The new rates are locked in for five years, through March 2031.
