By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party is preparing to protest today at Belize Telemedia Limited as the company’s Board of Directors meets to discuss matters reportedly including the acquisition of Speednet Communications.
Opposition Leader Tracy Panton confirms that party members will gather outside BTL’s offices to make their concerns known, despite not being invited to the board meeting.
“We will go and meet the board,” Panton says. “BTL is a public entity, and Belizeans deserve answers before decisions are made behind closed doors.”
According to Panton, the UDP is especially concerned about consolidation in the telecommunications sector and whether the acquisition serves the national interest.
She questions why such a large investment is being considered and whether proper due diligence has been carried out.
“Tell us what we are buying and why. Tell us how this helps Belizeans and prepares us for future competition,” she says.
While acknowledging that the protest may not immediately stop the board’s actions, Panton says the UDP believes it is necessary to take a public stand.
“Even if we cannot stop it today, we must make our position clear and ensure the people know what is happening,” she adds.
The protest is expected to draw attention to growing public concern over the proposed Speednet acquisition and calls for greater transparency in decision-making involving national assets.
