Court convicts teacher in student assault case; 18 month sentence imposed

By Belize Live News Staff: A San Pedro teacher has been sent to jail following a court conviction for sexual assault involving students.

Court reports indicate that Alex Jason Noralez, 47, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of two counts of sexual assault against students.

The incidents reportedly occurred in January 2024 and involved students in second form. Noralez was originally charged with three counts, but on January 21, 2026, the court found him guilty on two counts and cleared him of one count involving a younger student.

During the proceedings, Noralez was represented by attorney Ronnell Gonzalez and maintained that he did not commit any sexual act, claiming the contact was limited to hugs and that the interaction was innocent.

However, all three students testified during the trial, and the magistrate ultimately accepted the evidence supporting the two second form complaints.

As part of sentencing, the magistrate ordered that the two prison terms run at the same time, meaning the teacher will serve 18 months total behind bars.
