By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party has intensified its criticism of the proposed BTL acquisition of SMART, questioning both the structure of the deal and the potential risks to public funds.
The party says Belizeans have a right to know what is being negotiated in their name, particularly where public resources and national communications infrastructure are involved. It expressed concern that outdated or near-obsolete technologies could be purchased using taxpayer-linked funds, placing unnecessary financial burdens on the country.
The UDP also challenged the decision to bundle cable companies into the transaction, arguing that cable services are not synonymous with core telecommunications infrastructure and questioning whether their inclusion serves the national interest or private advantage.
The opposition says it stands ready to work alongside civil society, unions, and the business community to push for a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and insists that any major telecom transaction must be clean, defensible, and clearly in the public interest.
