GOB weighs tourism potential in Belize’s largest protected area

By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize is reviewing proposals that could introduce ecotourism development within the Chiquibul Forest, the country’s largest protected ecosystem and one of its most environmentally sensitive areas.

Sources indicate that several concepts, including a proposed high-end conservation tourism initiative, are currently being examined. Officials say the ideas are consistent with Belize’s goal of positioning itself as a premium tourism destination, though no decisions have been finalized.

The Chiquibul Forest is home to critical biodiversity, including endangered wildlife such as the scarlet macaw, making any form of development a matter of careful consideration. Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD), the non-governmental organization that co-manages the Chiquibul National Park, has expressed support for sustainable, well-managed tourism but cautions that any project must be guided by sound science and long-term environmental planning.

Stakeholders acknowledge that while ecotourism could create economic opportunities and strengthen conservation financing, it also carries significant environmental risks if not properly managed.

Minister of Sustainable Development Orlando Habet has emphasized that any ecotourism initiative in the Chiquibul must strike a careful balance between economic growth and the protection of Belize’s natural heritage. He noted that strict environmental safeguards would be required to ensure the forest remains intact for future generations.

Discussions on the proposals are ongoing, and authorities say further consultation and evaluation will take place before any decision is made.
