By Belize Live News Staff: Police in San Pedro have arrested and charged two women following a traffic enforcement checkpoint conducted on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, along 1 Mile North Road. The checkpoint formed part of ongoing efforts to target unlicensed drivers, uninsured vehicles, and escalating traffic violations in the area.
In the first case, police detained 22-year-old Nelly Marcelita Avila, a Belizean laborer, after she was reportedly found driving without a valid driver’s license and operating a vehicle not covered by third-party risk insurance. Officers say she was cautioned in accordance with procedure but elected to remain silent.
A second arrest was made later that day. 36-year-old Alejandra Leticia Castro, a Belizean laborer from the DFC Area, was charged with a series of offenses, including:
Permitting the use of a motor vehicle not covered by third-party insurance
Assaulting a police officer
Resisting lawful arrest
Using obscene language
Police say Castro also declined to provide a statement after being cautioned.
Authorities report that the charges arose directly from violations detected during the checkpoint operation. Both women have been processed and are expected to appear in court to answer to the allegations.
Police continue to encourage motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly licensed and insured, stressing that additional operations of this nature will continue throughout the month.
