By Belize Live News Staff: A man from Orange Walk has reported being the victim of an alleged rental scam after paying a deposit for a house that he never received. The incident was formally reported on Monday evening, November 24th, 2025, when the complainant visited the Orange Walk Police Station.
He told officers that on October 30th, 2025, he came across a Facebook advertisement posted by 64-year-old retired businessman Edward Reinhard Tillett, who claimed to have a two-bedroom house for rent in the Louisiana Area of Orange Walk Town. The complainant visited the location, and Tillett allegedly informed him that the home needed minor repairs but would be ready within two weeks. To secure the rental, Tillett reportedly requested a $300 cash deposit, which was paid and documented with a signed receipt.
Weeks passed, and each time the complainant checked on the house, he was met with excuses and continued delays. Growing suspicious, he confronted Tillett on November 19th, 2025, demanding a refund. After some resistance, Tillett returned only $50 and told him to return on November 23rd for the balance. The complainant says he never received the remainder of his money.
A statement was recorded, and the receipt was photocopied for evidence.
