Belize joins regional effort to strengthen domestic violence laws and protection for survivors

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has officially signed on to a new Regional Agreement on Domestic Violence, joining other Caribbean nations in committing to stronger laws, policies, and protections for survivors of abuse.

The signing took place during the Regional High-Level Symposium on State Responses to Domestic Violence in the Caribbean, held this week in Bridgetown, Barbados, and hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Office of the Attorney General of Barbados.

Belize’s Executive Director of the National Women’s Commission, Ms. Eleanor Murillo, signed the Agreement on the country’s behalf, reaffirming Belize’s ongoing efforts to tackle domestic and gender-based violence.

The Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs says the Agreement represents a shared regional commitment to improve how governments prevent, investigate, and respond to domestic violence, ensuring survivor-centered and rights-based approaches.

Belize is already conducting a legislative review of its Domestic Violence Act, signaling the government’s intent to modernize and strengthen the legal framework to better protect women, children, and families.

The Ministry describes this milestone as a major step forward for the Caribbean, emphasizing collaboration, accountability, and justice for all survivors.
