Tropical Storm Melissa forms over Caribbean, expected to strengthen this week

By Belize Live News Staff: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has reported that the weather disturbance in the central Caribbean Sea has now strengthened into Tropical Storm Melissa, producing maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour as of this morning.

The storm is currently moving slowly westward and is expected to intensify over the next few days. Meteorologists warn that the system will bring heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and dangerous sea conditions to parts of the ABC Islands, before impacting areas including Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Cuba later in the week.

Authorities say the Air Force Hurricane Hunters will conduct reconnaissance flights to better assess the storm’s strength and structure.

While Belize is not under immediate threat, the National Meteorological Service continues to monitor Melissa’s movement closely. Forecasters urge the public to stay alert and prepared, especially as the region enters the final stretch of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
