Authorities confirm Santa Elena murder that went unreported for days

By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities have confirmed that 42-year-old Shawn Hertular of Santa Elena was fatally shot over a week ago, in an incident that remained unreported by police until days later.

Reports indicate that on the morning of October 12, police officers patrolling the Bradley Bank area discovered Hertular suffering from severe head injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the San Ignacio Hospital, where he passed away shortly after.

Police say a post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound, and a person of interest is now being sought.

The delay in publicly reporting the homicide has sparked curiosity among residents, many of whom recall Hertular’s previous encounters with the law. Court documents show he had been charged with murder in 2021, but the case ended without conviction in 2024.

As the investigation continues, police have yet to release details about possible motives or suspects.
